If you'd rather not spend every Saturday pushing a noisy gas-powered mower around your yard, consider investing in a robot lawnmower and letting it do the work for you. Begin with some of the best we've tested.

Nothing beats the look and smell of freshly cut grass, but unless you pay for a professional landscaping service, you'll have to put in the effort to keep your lawn in good shape. You can either spend hours every week doing the work yourself, or you can invest in a robot lawn mower to do the work for you.

Robot lawn mowers, which are available for lawns of all shapes and sizes, are relatively simple to set up and program, and because they're powered by rechargeable battery packs, they're extremely quiet, allowing you to leave them to do their work at any time of day without disturbing the neighbors.

However, they are not cheap, and you will have to pay more for features such as rain and anti-theft sensors, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, a mobile app, and flexible scheduling capabilities. A model that can handle larger lawns with steep grades and obstructions such as flower beds, trees, and ornamental decorations will also cost more.

Find out which robotic lawn mower is best suited to your lawn size and your budget.

How Do Robot Lawn Mowers Function?

Robot lawn mowers look similar to robot vacuums. In action, it's almost like watching a Roomba darting around your lawn, tidying things up. When it comes to what's inside, however, things couldn't be more different.

Mowers all use a battery-powered motor with cutting blades, an AC-powered base station, perimeter wire, and sensors to keep them from wandering off your property or into the street. The perimeter wire is laid along the border of your lawn and held in place with stakes similar to those used to pitch a tent, with one end connected to a terminal on the base station.

The other end of the wire is connected to the second terminal at the base station. The base not only charges the mower but also provides an electrical charge to the wire. The charged wire is used by sensors on the mower to guide it along the boundaries and to return to the base when the lawn is cut or the battery needs to be recharged.
